It wasn't the book that disturbed me as a kid. It was the TV adaptation of it that really got to me. It was the scene in the cafeteria, where the main character and his friend trade lunches: a sandwich for leftover spaghetti. When his friend takes a bite out of the spaghetti, he immediately spits it out and discovers that it had worms in it. Since then, I haven't touched a plate of spaghetti again.
